Subject: Support for Sec. 136407 of Build Back Better Act
Dear [electeds]
In 2019, ten times as many school-aged children were killed
in car crashes as have died from COVID during the entire pandemic.
Extreme weather is getting worse because of climate changing resulting from the amount of carbon we have released in the atmosphere. In Arlington, transportation produces more carbon emissions than any other sector.
Conveniently, the way to address both of these problems is the same: get people to drive less. And ebikes (bikes with small electric motors) are a great alternative to driving for most trips in Arlington - they allow most people to get to most places carrying most things without a car.
My husband and I have raised 3 kids (now ages 6, 8 & 10) in Arlington with only one car (that we barely use) because of the flexibility of ebikes.
For too many, cost is a barrier to purchasing an ebike. Section 136407 of Build Back Better Act would address this by providing a 15% refundable tax credit for qualifying ebikes. I enthusiastic support this provision, and suggest it be improved by raising the cap on the price of ebikes eligible for the tax credit. Many of the "cargo" ebikes that families need to be able to carry children on their bikes cost up to $10,000. Because so few of our streets and trails are safe enough for children to bike on their own, these cargo ebikes are a must to fallowing families to use cars less.
I urge you to support section 136407 of Build Back Better Act and to push for a higher price cap. Please let me know if I can provide more information or help you on this topic.
Thank you for your time and your service.
